Dream a little dream: L’appartement

This is how I, a self-confessed francophile, a macaron-loving walking cliché and a Paris café junkie, have always envisioned myself: In a two-bedroom corner apartment in the mind-boggling City of Light, balcony with iron railing flowers and a view included. The idea didn’t come after my first visit to the French capital and no, I didn’t stand in front of the Eiffel Tower and just blurted out “This is where I wanna live someday”. No, it didn’t happen after the two-episode Sex & the City finale, although I am planning to recreate the Carrie’s ladybug skirt look next time I’m there.

It has been a long road, my affair with Paris. It started courting me, it romanced me, it seduced me and of course, left me wanting more and more. So much more, that I have devoured all the expats in Paris memoirs for sale in Amazon, I have a drawer with the following label: “French movies/Movies in Paris/Movies about Paris”, I have French decor boards on Pinterest and I read blogs, expat blogs that feed my obsession and make me feel a little bit part of their wonderful world. I AM A FRANCOPHILE AND I’M NOT ASHAMED!

And the dream apartment? The one I drew? That’s exactly how I see it in my dreams. Mint and pink, classic French decor, cushions with my initials, lots of light, baroque mirrors, chandeliers, fresh peonies, fashion books for my gold painted coffee table and the nude Chanel 2.55 wouldn’t hurt. Me wearing the Dior bow scarf with a mint bustier while drinking champagne while doing absolutely nothing? That was part of my visions too, I promise! A girl can dream, right? Wait till you see my closet!

From Paris (my imaginary Paris, for the moment), bisous…

PS: This illustration will be part of my upcoming print boutique on Etsy! Coming soon!

BIKINI SEASON 2013: Hello, Sailor!

sailor cover

Hell, hello my sweet readers! Summer has just started (Mexico City did not get that memo, rainy season in London seems nothing compared to this) and I can’t wait to pack my bikinis and leave again to a sunny destination! This is the fifth post from our Bikini Season special. Today’s style is not the newest of trends but a classic one: a sailor bikini is a must in every girl’s Summer closet. This beachwear trend lets you play the mix & match game (stripes with polka dots, anchors with solids and so on), it gives that old school, retro vibe we all love and it looks great with a tan and a skipper hat (you may laugh, but skipper caps are more fun than a straw or Panama hat). To start with today’s post, I made a Sailor Cheat Sheet, everything you’ll need to put together the “Ahoy, mate” look! Let’s start:

sailor chart

The balconette bra: It’s flattering for any boob style (padded for those who have less, with good coverage and underwire for those who have more) and it looks great with any bikini bottom. Look for a navy one with prints or with draping details for a retro vibe.

  • Topshop
  • J.Crew
  • Topshop
  • River Island
  • Dorothy Perkins
  • Heidi Klein

The stripes: Nothing says sailor like a stripe bikini. Buy a two piece so you can mix the top or the bottom with other prints or solid pieces. A stripe one-piece? It’s a risk but one you must not be afraid of! Try it!

  • J.Crew
  • Vix
  • By Malene Birger
  • Dorothy Perkins

Polka dots: Also a classic, always a classic when it comes to swimwear. Polka dots have a great retro vibe and a touch of Lolita. Don’t be afraid to mix up the colors, the size of the dots and the prints. Have fun!

  • Seafolly
  • NewLook
  • J.Crew
  • Rosamosario

Solid bottoms: Like the lovely France flag, get one blue, one white and one navy. Solids are the best way to reinvent your bikinis. And when it comes to the sailor style, this three colors will go with every stripe, every dot and every nautical motif.

  • Heidi Klein
  • Violet Lake
  • La Perla
  • Orlebar Brown
  • River Island
  • J. Crew

Now I have a garment and accessory selection so you can rock on the sailor style this Summer:

  1. White bikini top, Heidi Klein
  2. Anchor bikini bottom, J.Crew
  3. Striped slippers, Zara
  4. Anchor tee, By Malene Birger
  5. Drawstring shorts, Eberjey
  6. Straw hat, Eugenia Kim
  7. Nail polish selection, Dior
  8. Stripe dress, SEA
  9. Cherry in the Air perfume, Escada
  10. Navy sunnies, Balenciaga
  11. Red rope sandals, RED Valentino
  12. Quilted bag, Moschino
  13. Striped bikini top, Topshop
  14. Stripes bikini bottom, EJE

That’s a wrap! Hope you like this style as much as I like it! Soon, new surprises, more illustrations and of course, more Summer fashion! Don’t miss it!

Sweet kisses…

Sweet n’raw’s X’mas Gift Guide: QUEEN OF DIAMONDS

queen of diamonds

It’s almost Friday and as days go by, X’mas is getting closer and closer. Office parties, dinners with friends, family get-togethers are filling up our calendars and gifts to buy are seriously piling up. We still have 10 days to finish shopping and wrapping our presents. And since Christmas is not the time to browse and look around (more like pushing and elbowing fellow shoppers in search of the perfect item), it’s better to go shopping knowing exactly what to get and where to get it. This is the fourth part of Sweet n’Raw’s X’mas Shopping Guide and one that will help you a lot on your gift quest.

There’s a princess inside every girl and most of us have a weakness for all things glittery. That is why today I’m giving you, wait for it… the Queen of Diamonds. So if you have a friend that’s lusting over those pretty, shiny  phone cases… If you have a friend that owns more sequin jumpers than she does shoes… If you know someone who is a sucker for all things embellished and embroidered… If powdery shades and nude are your colleague’s favorite… If a chignon and a delicate skater dress make up for the perfect holiday party outfit, this is the list you are gonna need to check out.

LFW COVERAGE: Beautiful Chaos

It’s Sunday and instead of my relaxing routine, I find myself drowning in a sea of runway reviews, missed deadlines, photos and more. The good news is, I just went to the supermarket (ran out of coffee and milk, I die without them) wearing nothing than a thin, trench coat! Milano is finally accepting the fact that Spring is about to start and there’s nothing that stupid Winter can do about it. Anyway, as I told you yesterday, our lovely New York rendezvouz is now history. We find ourselves (a little late) in the beautiful city of London and what an opening line-up have I put up together for you, my sweet readers: Eye-popping Holly Fulton, drama king Giles, print clasher Erdem and my personal favorite, the fabulous Antonio Berardi. So, let the games begin!

Leave it to Acne to keep the cool and simple with a twist of random. The Swedish brand is all about the natural swag and this collection is proof of it. This collection was all about shape distortion, Johnny Johansson took his inspiration in three artists. With one quick look at the works of André Kertész or Hans Bellmer, you can absolutely see the influence on the designer’s garments. With ‘Blue Monday’ playing on the back, Johansson sent out the runway a total of 35 looks, each an every one of them with an interesting construction and a beautiful color clash. The shoes are definitely something to remember, so are the volumes and proportions and that two-tone blazer (last image). Simply fabulous!

I’ve always had a soft spot for Antonio Berardi and after this show, it has become massive and softer. First of all, his color palette. It was so diverse but at the same time, it had a clear continuity. The transition from the gray, to the red, to the blush, to the aquamarine and so on, was so subtle and beautiful. Models looked perfectly put together in those precisely tailored numbers Berardi sent out the runway. Everything was sharply cut but never straight, just look at the curved panels and uneven pleats.

The collection was inspired by artist Giacomo Serpotta, hence the beautiful and sculptural silhouettes. Textures played a very important part on Berardi’s show, fur made a brief appearance, there was also shiny, glossy and those teal shoes, OH, THOSE TEAL SHOES! To me, it was all so beautiful, although I wasn’t crazy about his last gown. But hey, getting right 42 out of 43 is pretty damn good.

From the opening to the closing, Giles runways are always packed with drama. This season’s catwalk was no exception. Last year he gave us those monumental, bird headpieces, this time is was all about a dark romance and edgy glamour. The show opened up with a startling mask made by Stephen Jones (same mind behind the gorgeous swans) paired up with a sharp tuxedo number. From the first dark look, Deacon’s collection escalated into artistic and femenine shapes.

Color palette was mainly neutral and textures played a major role in the whole dramatic exhibition. Lengths went from mid and mullets to long with movement. The main detail worth mentioning: the burnt-like, laser cut stains that worked as prints on some of his final dresses. It was chaos, beautiful chaos.

If you thought the mash-up was a Spring trend, think again because Erdem has taken it to a whole new level for Fall 2012. After the soft floral hit from last season, the brand decided to maintain the theme but with a very different and darker take on it. With a front row that included editorial legends, Anna Wintour and Franca Sozzani, the Erdem show was definitely the place to be. The color palette included bold colors such as fuchsia and chartreuse in beautiful laces and painted prints. As seen in most of this season’s fashion shows, the length was midi (it was almost all dresses and skirts, a few trouser looks made an appearance). My love for ERDEM grows and grows with each season, just like their powerful and beautiful prints.

It’s gonna be a flashy and bright Winter for Holly Fulton, also one filled with graphic prints and textures. Miss Fulton’s show was packed with sharp tailoring and simple shapes. Fitted dresses and pencil skirts were the main element one the runway and a lot of leg flashing. In a sea of midi lengths, she managed to give us a few mini ones, thank God. The high notes: the almost baroque black number, the Versacesque jacket/top/skirt flashy combos and the oversized pink blazer,  I sure love them all.

London calls for a laid-back look, and this is what I came up with. I chose a pair of yellow leggings with a liquid finish from ASOS. I paired them up with a plaid shirt with an ombre effect from ZARA. Over it, I threw on a navy v-neck jumper from CLOSED. For more contrast, poppy red platform shoes from NASTY GAL.

For the bag, a bright green City Balenciaga, a classic in a flashy color. Accessories are little bit on the edge, a pack of tribal bracelets, a claw golden ring and a skull one (all three from ASOS). Last but not least, Dior Vernis in Blue Label for your nails.

There you go! Better late than ever, right? 6 down, a lot more to go. London is on fire, Milan and Paris are on the pits, ready to get their engines started.

For all the details on today’s look, go to FASHIOLISTA.

Sweet kisses…

NAIL FILES: Chiquita Banana

And after a week of no posts, we meet again my sweet readers! Going back to Europe after a month in my beloved Mexico always means chaos. Between the jet lag, the cold and harsh Winter, a month’s worth of dust inside my apartment, cleaning, unpacking, school and yes, spending time with my gentle giant, I’ve only begun to adjust to my daily life (hence the lack of posts). But I am back, and since our last NAIL FILES post was all about X-mas and we are so over it right now, another one is in order. I’m craving Spring more than ever, not only because I am a S/S kind of gal, but also because I have returned to frozen hell (Italy) after many days in my warm heaven I like to call Mexico. So, while we long for the most beautiful season of them all, why not get our nails ready for it. What better way to do so, than with a little inspiration from the queen of bright and samba, Miss Carmen Miranda and her fruits!

The Daily Fashion Bread: November 14, 2011

Good day my sweet readers! The Daily Fashion Bread is back after a long pause tasting better than ever! For those of you new to Sweet’n’Raw, this section is all about the latest fashionable news and trendy happenings in the world! If you wanna know who shot who (camera shot), who wore what, who got sacked and more juicy information, you’ve come to the right place. So without further ado, here it is, freshly baked, your daily fashion bread!

Christian Dior, the search is still on. It was on March when the whole Galliano meltdown madness exploded and he was sacked from the french house. The rumor mill hasn’t stopped running since then, the latest of them was that the man of the hour, Mr. Marc Jacobs was being considered for the position and that the negotiations had begun. Today it is a fact that the designer is no longer wanted for the job, some have said that it’s due to his salary demands, others because the LVMH group is beyond satisfied with the job he has been doing so far as Louis Vuitton’s Creative Director. Other names have been added to the list, Riccardo Tisci who does not want to leave Givenchy, Sarah Burton, Raf Simmons, Haider Ackermann and the genius that is Mr. Hedi Slimane. To this point, wouldn’t it be better to bring Galliano back? Seriously, I miss the man, would you bring him back, pretty please?

Tamara Mellon bids goodbye to Jimmy Choo. It’s the end of an era for Jimmy Choo as its co-founder, Tamara Mellon parts ways with the famous shoe brand. Labelux Group acquired it last May for an estimate of 500 million pounds. The group said that they would keep both Mellon and Joshua Schulman, the CEO, on board, but it is now a fact that they are both leaving the company in an amicable way and with big fat checks inside their pockets. It will be interesting to see the direction that Jimmy Choo will be taking and also what projects up her sleeve Miss Mellon has for the future.

Carine, the world’s most fashionable grandma. Julia Restoin-Roitfeld is three months pregnant, it was announced on Facebook by the happy momma-to-be herself. It’s the first grandchild for Carine Roitfeld and first child also for Julia. The father is model Robert Konjic, we already know that this is going to be one gorgeous and fashionable baby! Congrats to the future parents!

Snooki is officially a celebrity. Well at least some people think that once you own your own perfume you become one. This is a fashion site so normally a character like this one would be banned from it, but I can’t help it, all that tackiness in such a small person amuses me. So here for you, Snooki’s perfume ad (that pickle bite is something worth seeing).

This is my 90th post! And when we get to a 100, there is a big surprise waiting for you!

Sweet kisses…

The Daily Fashion Bread: June 21, 2011

Well, I have kept you newsless for the past two days. The lovely Sirmione, Italy kept me away from my laptop for a while (my eyes thanked me for the break!). But freshly baked, or not, here it is, your daily bread!

  • Versace for H&M, God has answered our prayers, fashion people! Joining Roberto Cavalli, Comme des Garçons, Matthew Williamson, Jimmy Choo and Lanvin, who have previously collaborated with the Swedish retailer, Versace has just signed a deal to design a collection fot H&M. It will be available on November 19, so mark that date on you calendars! Donatella Versace and her glamourous creations will be hitting the web and selected stores this fall. And her spring pre-collection will be available on January only for online purchase. She will be doing womenswear, menswear and even a little home inspired by iconic pieces from previous collections! WATCH THE VIDEO ANNOUNCEMENT HERE

  • Alaïa to Dior: No thanks! After the Galliano incident (currently in rehab but his appearance in court is expected on Wednesday) and months of speculation about who will succed the designer as Creative Director of the french fashion house, we are still in the dark. Names have been said, including Burton, Ackermann and Tisci, but up until now just rumors.  What we do know is that the Tunisian designer, Azzedine Alaïa was offered the job and turned it down. Flattered but not interested, the designer is said to have refused to take the position because of the pressure and fast pace big fashion houses work with. Alaïa, now in his 70’s, has alway worked at his own pace.
  •  David “Candy” Gandy. Aside from the fact that I saw his fabulous self three days ago in person and my heart stopped for a few seconds, Mr. Gandy, the world’s most beautiful man, has now been immortalized in a book. Fashion Designer duo, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana (also his biggest fans) have compilated in a book the britsh model’s career highlights, including those white speedo’s everyone has been drooling about ever since the Light Blue campaign came out. From catwalk pictures to unseen portraits, this book, David Gandy by Dolce & Gabbana is all about a gorgeous piece of mancandy, also known as David Gandy.
  • McMenamy for Gaultier Fall 2011. Veteran model Kristen McMenamy has got it going on. Ever since that Vogue Italia’s cover, the 46 year old has walked the runway for Lagerfeld in Chanel Cruise 2012 and has now snagged Jean Paul Gaultier’s latest ad campaign for fall. Styled by the one and only, Carine Roitfeld, Kristen looks sleek and chic in a tight leather skirt!
Check back for a new post, coming up soon!
Sweet kisses…
